Quilted Gifts for the Grandkids
Grandchildren are fun…lots and lots of fun! So, when it comes time for Christmas, we want to have super presents for our grandchildren (as well as the other special children in our lives.)
A few years ago, Bake (my husband) and I started the tradition that we call The Pile of Quilts. We put all the quilts that we are giving under the Christmas tree. I don’t fold them; I don’t wrap them. I just heap them in a big pile. Our kids, their spouses, and our grandkids draw numbers to determine what order they go in. When their number comes up, they get to choose something from under the tree. It’s lots of fun and it saves me from trying to figure out who will like which quilt.
You’ll notice that there are pillows, small quilts, and large quilts. We have a large family, so I need a lot of finished projects in order to have enough.
This past Christmas, I didn’t have nearly enough quilts done until my good friend, Mellisa, came and spent two days helping me by binding quilts as I finished them.
Here are a couple of my favorite kid quilts from 2019. You’ll note that they both start with a panel. Panels are a super way to get quilts off to a good start.
This quilt started with the panel, framed with the green dot border, then the white border, and then the improv-pieced border. I simply sewed together squares and rectangles of fabric, cut them all to the same width and added them to frame the quilt. I’m sorry but I can’t tell you the name of this bright and colorful fabric.
This is one of my favorite photos from our family Christmas. I’ve always been a fan of the Eric Carle children’s books, so I love this Eric Carle fabric panel by Andover Fabrics. This border is super simple, I made Rail Fence blocks and sewed them together.
So, am I more prepared this year than I was last? Yes, I am! I have 10 projects done, 1 bed-size quilt that I’m in the process of binding, 2 throw-size quilts and one bed-size quilt that just need to be quilted and bound. I need to have 20 or so projects finished so I’m getting really close and Christmas is still two months away!!
And there are smaller projects you can make, like this pillow.
Here is a bundle with 6 baby quilts.
And how about this collection of twin-size quilt patterns for the toddlers (and college students) on your list.

And don’t panic. We still have two months!!
Happy quilting!
