Piecing the Blocks
Step 2. Referring to Diagrams II and III, make beige/gray/beige and beige/black/- beige pieced rectangles.

Step 3. Sew together beige strip, beige/-gray/beige pieced rectangle, black strips, and sewing machine center as shown in Diagram IV. Stitch beige/black/beige pieced rectangle to side. Sew beige 1 1/2″ x 20″ strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining beige 1 1/2″ x 20″ strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides to complete Sewing Machine Block. To make needle, work satin stitch by machine or hand (see Diagram V) using black thread. Step 4. On wrong side of beige 1″ squares, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram VI-A, place beige squares on top corners of white-on-white rectangle, right sides together. Sew on drawn lines; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open to make pieced rectangle. Make Button Jar Block as shown in Diagrams VI-B and VI-C. |

Step 5. On wrong side of beige 1 7/8″ square, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram VII-A, place beige square on brown 1 7/8″ square, right sides together. Sew 1/4″ seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares. Make 72. Make 18 total Spool Blocks as shown in Diagram VII-B.

Appliquéing the Blocks
Step 6. Finger-press beige 4 1/2″ squares in half twice diagonally; use folds as placement guide. Referring to photo and Assembly Diagram, position template fabrics in alphabetical order. Hint: Maintain 1/4″ seam allowance around edge of beige squares. Using appliqué method of choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions), appliqué in place. Using black floss, buttonhole stitch (see Diagram VIII) edges. Backstitch (see Diagram IX) details on Pincushion Block.

Step 7. Refer to Assembly Diagram for this step. To make top/bottom pieced borders, arrange and stitch 2 rows of 4 Spool Blocks each. Stitch to top/bottom of quilt. To make side pieced borders, arrange and stitch 1 vertical row using 6 Spool Blocks and Pincushion Block and 1 vertical row using 4 Spool Blocks, Rotary Cutter Block, and Button Jar Block. Stitch to sides of quilt. Sew beige 1 1/2″ x 30″ strips to sides; trim even with top/bottom. Sew remaining beige strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Sew brown/blue plaid 4″ x WOF strips to sides; trim even with top/bottom. Sew remaining brown/blue strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.

Quilting and Finishing
Step 8. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions). Michele machine quilted a large stipple design in the beige background. She hand quilted an outline stitch around the spools, button jar, pincushion, and rotary cutter. She hand quilted a stem and double leaf design in the large black rectangles of the sewing machine and in the outer border. To add finishing touches, sew black button to center of rotary cutter blade and stitch assorted buttons in jar.
Step 9. Bind quilt with black print fabric (see Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
