It’s official. The 3200 series of “Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting” really re-set the bar.

Every season of “Love of Quilting” is so exciting, because there are new quilt patterns, patchwork techniques, smart tips, and—of course—old friends.

Visits With Old Friends

Marianne Fons, along with her daughter Mary, visited again for a few episodes. And though Liz Porter didn’t join us on set, her quilts certainly did!

On episode 3203, Marianne shares Patchworthy, made using scrappy nine-patch blocks that were part of a block exchange. As a special extra, we get to see how Liz Porter used her blocks in a different layout, which we’ve called Liz’s Patchwork.

And Mary’s quilt Starry Surprise, on episode 3209, is a different take on a classic Liz Porter pattern, Pinwheel Stars. Liz’ version featured 1930s reproduction fabrics and had sashing to frame the quilt blocks. Mary’s quilt is definitely a scrap quilt (“If it’s scrappy, I’m happy,” she said of her quilting style), with novelty prints fussy-cut and framed in the red pinwheel star quilt blocks.

It’s a great quilt design for a kid quilt—who’s up for a game of I-Spy?

Get Gussied Up!

Speaking of scrap-busting and fussy-cutting, Angela Huffman’s quilt All Gussied Up, featured on episode 3202, is spectacular. The technique she teaches—fabric collage—is a marvelous way to unleash your creativity…and use up lots of scraps!

Angela brought examples of her students’ work, most made from patterns by independent designer Laura Heine of Fiberworks, so you can see the range of this technique.

(The bonus technique for this episode? Angela’s trick for matching motifs in border prints means less yardage and more wow!)

New Methods for Bargello

Sue Harvey and Sandy Boobar joined Sara Gallegos on set to teach a unique approach to a Bargello quilt.

One of the most popular and distinct styles of patchwork, Bargello quilts have a cascading, almost swirling pattern that emerges through planned-out sequences of patches. These ladies shared a different method, involving strip sets, and the resulting throw-sized, purple quilt is enough to stop anyone in their tracks.

Snip-Away to Dazzle

Another stunning technique was shared by our guest Karla Herrin on episode 3201—reverse appliqué! Using layers of jewel-toned batiks and the embroidery function on her sewing machine, she created a wall hanging that is a work of art—and easy! Using scissors with a curved tip, she was able to cut away layers, revealing the fabrics underneath. Best of all, with this quilt pattern, you can make these quilt blocks entirely in the hoop! You’ve really GOT to see how easy it is!
