Games are a great way to have fun and to bring your family and friends together for some friendly competition. In Quick Quilts April/May 2019, we have a collection of quilt designs that are inspired by games that span the generations. From Abaci, a design that brings to mind an ancient counting machine to Level Up, a quilt with a modern-day video game-inspired theme, this issue has a game-oriented quilt for a person of any age. Make a quilt to spread out on the lawn and play a game on or a quilt to snuggle up in as you spend a cool summer evening gaming on the patio.

Muggins

Muggins is featured on the cover and is a super fun quilt by Sara Lister. Made in homage to the classic Dominoes game, what could be better to bring you gamer’s good luck? All of the dots on the dominoes are applied with fusible web and then machine appliquéd. Be patient when cutting out and stitching the dots so they end up nice and circular rather than wonky and enjoy!

Bejeweled

Ramona Sorenson’s Bejeweled is full of shiny gemstones set against a rich, dark background. The blocks are fast and simple to assemble using the Stitch-and-Flip technique and are an ode to video games.

Abaci

Abaci may look complex upon first glance, but it is actually quite simple to make. Elaine Theriault made this quilt using quick strip piecing for the background. The circles are applied with fusible web and then machine appliquéd. For a twist on this pattern, use Christmas fabrics and fussy cut the circles to look like ornaments hanging on a garland.

Marbles

Marbles is a quilt composed of large stars which are reminiscent of an old board game. When making Marbles , Charisma Horton used a scrappy selection of blue and red prints for the small star blocks in her quilt. You can do the same or you can use one blue print and one red print for the blocks to create a more formal look.

Level Up

Level Up is a fun video game-themed quilt designed by Pam Nourse. Pam used the Pocket Arcade collection of fabrics by Timeless Treasures as the focal point of her quilt, bringing back memories of old-school arcade games. Changing the focus fabric can change the entire mood of the quilt – from whimsical kids’ quilts using novelty fabrics, to elegant quilts using Asian prints, or veterans’ quilts with a patriotic red, white, and blue focus. Raid your stash for cute novelty prints and let your imagination run wild with this versatile design.
