Friday Free Quilt Patterns: Whiskey and Old Lace | McCall’s Quilting Blog
Traditional quilt patterns never seem to go out of style. Although modern quilters may give them facelifts with fresh fabrics, unusual layouts, or unique quilting, there’s something classically elegant about block-based patchwork that draws the eye and comforts the soul.
That’s why I think you’ll love this week’s Friday Freebie, Whiskey and Old Lace by Nancy Mahoney. For this free lap size quilt pattern, 25 Country Lanes quilt blocks are set with simple sashing and framed by a basic border. The results are pretty show-stopping…take a look!
Strip piecing makes these blocks much easier and quicker than they appear at first glance. And using a variety of fabrics in each of 3 color families (red, brown, and tan here, but you could change that up) gives the quilt a controlled scrappy look that adds depth and interest.
This quilt was chosen by acquisitions editor Lori Baker for the I Love This Quilt! page of the July/August issue of McCall’s Quilting, so if you’re a subscriber you’ve already had a first look at it. (Not a subscriber? Subscribe now for a special offer and never miss an issue!)
Read Lori’s blog about her version of the quilt (VERY different in appearance) and download the free Whiskey and Old Lace quilt pattern here. It’s a Friday FREEbie!
