Podcast Letter

Paulet Gabourey – excerpt from her letter and quilt.

“I have been quilting for most of my adult life as my maternal Grandmother (Bobbi Fulton) taught me after my first child was born. She would spend a week in October (our birthday month) with me and we would take a trip to the fabric store and spend the week sewing.   Grandma Bob did things the old way and never wasted anything.  The first quilt we made is hanging behind my bed, it is faded and well loved.  She was born in 1907 and lived to the ripe old age of 105+!  She was widowed at 37 years old, with 5 children to raise so she used her sewing skills and became a tailor to put food on the table.  Her vision began failing her later in life and she didn’t sew much towards the end of her life.  Before she passed, she shared several amazing treasures!!! A small hard sided Samsonite suitcase under her bed, in it was a quilt that she made ii 1932 while expecting her only son. Hand embroidered, put together, and hand quilted by my grandmother and her mother (Emilia Rodgers)!! I would love to display this somewhere but am afraid at this point the sun and air would destroy it. It sits, in the suitcase above my sewing table, so she can see what I am doing! “

This is the quilt that Paulet Gabourey told us about in her letter. Made by Bobbi Fulton and Emilia Rodgers in 1932.
