quilt-trellis-flatMarianne Fons shares Trellis on the 3200 series of “Love of Quilting,” and it’s a stunner! Inspired by a quilt done at the International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln, NE, Marianne adapted the design, resulting in this 110” x 110” king-sized quilt.

“It’s a humdinger,” Marianne says. In fact, it’s the largest quilt she has made to date.

“I’ll tell you all, the whole reason this quilt is so large, was because I wanted to work with 2-inch finished half-square triangles… Because 1-1/2” squares are just so much harder,” Marianne says, with a laugh. “So, if I’d made them 1-1/2”, it would have been a smaller quilt.”

There are 833 Half Square Triangles (HSTs) in this quilt, all finishing 2” (just like Marianne wanted!), which create feathering on large squares of fabric. Those 833 HSTs are scary to think about, it’s true. The trick is finding ways to simplify the piecing. We recommend our 8-at-a-Time Triangles Squares technique. There are also products on the market, like Triangles on a Roll or Finished Triangle Paper from Primitive Gatherings, that can go a long way to preserving your sanity.

The gorgeous large blocks of fabric really lend themselves to large-scale prints. Marianne was happy to completely use up some lovely toile prints that had been lingering in her stash… Until she made a wrong cut. She sliced one of the blocks way too small and didn’t have enough fabric to fix it. Because the fabric had been in her stash for years, there was none to be had in the stores either.

Desperate, Marianne put out a plea on social media, and quilters from all corners dug into their stashes…and found what she needed! That’s the power of the quilting community!

And we’re all grateful because a quilt this beautiful—challenging though it may be—is worth making!
