At the beginning of each year, designer Heather Kojan makes a list of all the quilts she wants to make in the new year. In 2018, she made the list and then promptly ignored it… instead, she wanted to make something new and she knew that scraps would be a major part of it. Inspired by the hashtags #sewmystash, #scrapquilt and #usewhatyouhave, she started sewing on January first and documented her work using the hashtag #januaryproject. Scrap Lattice was the result.

Heather’s modern scrap quilt confirms that the deep blue prints and low volume neutrals in your fabric collection don’t need to languish: put them to good use with scrappy improv. This may be a scrap-busting project, but it also showcases the fabrics in your collection in a modern design.

Heather says:
“My intent was to make one improv block for each day in January, using only my scraps. Originally, I thought I’d start with my blue scraps, then move on to another color. After 36 blocks, my blue scrap box is still not empty! I learned a lot during the making of this quilt. Mainly, that I’m not cut out for a block a day! Although I tried to sew every day, I much preferred working on several blocks at a time, completing them in batches. And I also learned that it is unlikely I will ever run out of blue scraps!”
